November 3, 20232 yr #1 Hello! I bought what I believe to be a German M16. The split pins are replaced and it looks to be repainted, all else checks out it seems though. I bought it for $50 along with an Italian Adrian helmet for an additional $50!
November 3, 20232 yr #2 Could also be Austrian, I am no expert, looks like a real genuine helmet, repainted new spit pins etc, but good none the less nice find! Gear Fanatic
November 3, 20232 yr Author #3 @Gear FanaticTrue, maybe the inside isn't repainted, has a European Z in the initials or whatever that was.
November 3, 20232 yr #4 Yes the inside does resemble the Austro-Hungarian Brown Shade, but it is a German M16, the Austro-Hungarians did buy a lot of them M16s from Germany, and then they stated to make their own version, it was designated the M17. This is their M17, the Rivet for Chin Strap as is the Chin Strap itself, which was made of heavy course fabric, is patently different from the German.
November 3, 20232 yr Author #5 @patchesSo the only other way to tell would be if I had the rest of the liner, correct?

No because we see the Chin Strap Lugs, thats those Lugs with points on the inside of the skirt (I don't know what these are called LOL), the Chin Strap being the exact same ones as used on the Picklehaube, that tell us its a German one, the liner system in yours is refered to as the M17, Metal Band that has the Pads Crimped into it, as oposed to the first type, the M16 that had a Leather Band with Pads sewn on to band. The M16 Liner with Leather Band The M17 with Metal Band
November 8, 20232 yr #7 The German M16 as seen in this Iconic Photo of a Austro Hungarian Soldier, the thing we see, the German M16's Picklehaube Chinstrap
November 21, 20232 yr #8 Troops here wearing exclusively the German M16 Helmet in 1917, we guess in the Alps, Field Marshal Conrad von Hötzendorf inspecting there.
