May 9, 20251 yr #51 Hi Bill, was able to find 1 additional pic of the liner. Not sure it will help much but I'm including both for you. BTW, it sold for $350 (fortunately not to me)
May 9, 20251 yr #52 The top photo shows a better picture of the liner, you'll notice that there is no joint in the back of the liner where the liner bridge joins, which would have been stitched together.

Still focusing on the Arisaka Type 38 carbine. Just for my edification. Its been a couple of months, I Wanted to thank you for the information & time dedicated to educating me.
September 18, 2025Sep 18 Author #54 thank you If you are looking for rare original Japanese pieces, I am at your disposal.
September 18, 2025Sep 18 #55 Thank you Titus I appreciate it & all your assistance you've given. Ive used all input to pick up a Type 90 navy helmet, an NCO Katana. Also a named goodluck flag which came with a recruitment sash, armband and a rules regulations booklet (named to the flag). Booklet has a section for the soldier to write any they liked. Wish I read Japanese!
September 18, 2025Sep 18 #57 Sure can. I'm working on another project now, but should be able to get some up tonight
September 18, 2025Sep 18 #58 Here you go. Probably can see immediately that the liner is a poor reproduction. I have a quality repro on the way. I'll be looking for a correct wwii liner in the meantime.
September 18, 2025Sep 18 #59 What's up Mike, the tie tapes are also bad, but what I can see the tie tape rings on both sides look O.K.. Can you please post photos of the manufacturers stamps on the rear skirt. Good luck trying to find an original liner. Thanks,Bill
September 19, 2025Sep 19 #60 Hi Bill, good to hear from you. OMG Bill that liner wasn't even close to being usable. I picked up an original (reproduction) it is a faithful reproduction of the original. I'll use that until I can find an original.
September 19, 2025Sep 19 #61 Yeah Mike the liner is a repro, I was referring to the metal rings the tie tapes go through that were supposed to break if a artillery shell landed too close, and they would break so the concussion would tear off the helmet with out taking off the soldiers head
September 19, 2025Sep 19 #62 Sorry about that. Yes everything is in great shape. Pulled the old liners & wonder if it's the 'rubberized' material I've read about? I want to thank you for all your help in getting up to speed. I did buy the books & did research and spent time comparing shapes, etc. They are a great resource - Mike
September 19, 2025Sep 19 #63 The split pins holding the liner in are not navy and truthfully, there isn't much about this helmet that I like. The badge looks wrong but would need better pics, and the paint on the helmet looks off to me as well, but that could just be lighting. Scott
September 19, 2025Sep 19 #64 Cool, thx Hey Bill, touching base. I enjoy collecting. I do it for my own pleasure. Not so much for others. Yup he's right about the anchor. Looks like it's been redone from the front view. Looking at the backside shows proper aging, dirt & grime. You & Titus are among those I trust (a few others - dementia is so kind)
September 20, 2025Sep 20 Author #65 Hello, well the photos are not great, but for me the badge is also fake. The shell and paint are ok but have undergone a very big cleaning... but collecting is according to the means and the finds so it's a good little start... personally I prefer to collect only the original even for a helmet... too bad I will remove the interior already.. They were leather, pigskin or canvas, I don't think I missed any.😁
September 21, 2025Sep 21 #67 If I recall Navy used pig & Army cow (not that it matters). This stuff is weird. It appears to have been worn and has the feel of some sort of rubber. That's just my wild shot in the dark.

Also the paint seems to have applied at 3(?). The last coat applied. The last coat looks as though it was applied with a paintbrush (from bottom to first 3"). The badge is metal with and it shows the wear which you'd expect, on the backside.
